Geoffrey Beene, American Iconoclast
January 27, 2015
Geoffrey Beene (1927-2004) was one of America’s most original designers, revered for his distinctive vision and commitment to his craft. He was born in Louisiana and studied fashion in the United States. He later apprenticed in Europe, learning the traditions of the Haute Couture, and returned to America to establish Geoffrey Beene Inc.
He was among the first American designers to show his work in Europe and Japan, and was the recipient of 8 Coty Fashion Critics Awards, fashion’s highest honor, and 4 awards from the Council of Fashion Designers, including a Lifetime Achievement Award.
His work was the subject of a retrospective at The Museum at FIT in 1994, and he was named an American Original by the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in 2002.
